Off the Beaten Path: Visiting Lake Natron

Located in the northern safari circuit, Lake Natron is one of the more off the beaten path places to visit in Tanzania. Lake Natron is a large alkaline, or salt, lake located in the the northern part of the Ngorongoro region of Tanzania. It measures 57 km long (35 miles) and 22 km (14 miles) wide. Lake Natron is a game controlled region that is located 136 km (84 miles) northwest of Arusha, Tanzania. It is near the border of Kenya, with ~10% of the lake is located within Kenya and the remainder within Tanzania along the Great Rift Valley. Being located in one of the deepest valleys, just 600m above sea level, it is much warmer and drier around Lake Natron than the adjacent northern safari circuit.

Lake Natron Safari Guide

What is Lake Natron area known for?

Lake Natron is famous for its crimson red algae blooms during the dry season, where evaporative losses raise the lake’s pH to nearly 11! This creates a harsh environment for most life, but it is the primary breeding ground in the world for the Lesser Flamingo. Around 75% of the world’s lesser flamingos lay their eggs on dirt mounds amidst the crimson crusted lake. These flamingos feed on cyanobacteria, giving their feathers a stunning pink hue while thriving in predator-free waters.

The area is also home to Ol Doinyo Lengai – Tanzania’s only active carbonate volcano, known as “The Mountain of God” by the Maasai tribe. Its unique magma is colder and more fluid than typical volcanoes, making the landscape extraordinary and culturally significant.

Lake Natron is accessible via rough roads, so a 4WD vehicle and an experienced driver/guide are highly recommended. Routes include:

  1. From Arusha – 84 miles away, 3.5-4 hours of travel
  2. From Mto wa Mbu – 3-4 hours of travel
  3. From Serengeti Klein’s Gate – 4-5 hours; stay near the gate for easier access

What to do?

Wildlife and avian photography along the lake’s edge is extraordinary. Over 250 bird species congregate here, including lesser and greater flamingos, great white pelicans, pied avocets, yellow-billed storks, and other waders. The Rift Valley escarpment adds dramatic backdrops for your shots. Other wildlife includes zebra, wildebeest, gerenuk, oryx, and lesser kudu.

Hiking and trekking around Ol Doinyo Lengai are spectacular. Visit Ngare Sero waterfall and nearby hot and cold springs, or take the challenging climb up the volcano for unparalleled views. The region is a photographer’s paradise.

When to go?

Lake Natron is visitable year-round, but the dry season provides better road conditions. June, July, and August are cooler months, while December and January offer spectacular views of flamingos with their hatchlings. See the climate guide for more details.

Where to stay?

Lodging options are limited, but one of the best is Lake Natron Tented Camp. Located along the lake’s edge, it features freshwater springs, natural swimming pools, and scenic views of Ol Doinyo Lengai. Explore the lake bed and discover ancient hominid footprints preserved over millennia.
